we are second-generation ashtangis

Posted by on December 14, 2011

We’re kicking off this blog in preparation for our first ever trip to Mysore, India to practice at the Ashtanga Yoga Institute. It will be a space to share the journey with our students and friends and hopefully it grows to become a resource for all of us second-generation Ashtangis out there, learning from our teachers who learned it from Guruji. Pass it on! That’s the idea.

We practice Mysore-style, alongside others, but always on our own. We have breakthroughs, we have pain. Curious things happen, sometimes nothing seems to happen for a very long time. Its subtle, and its not subtle at all. We stay up too late, we get up early. We skip morning oatmeal for the sake of Marichyasana D. We make excuses, we’re afraid, we think we’ll surely break in half or maybe even die but we keep showing up on the mat at 6 AM. And the practice is teaching us how to live. Its difficult to explain exactly how that is possible, but it is. And we think that is pretty cool.

We are the 99% (practice, that is.)

More to come! For now, check out our list of 2012 moon days (oh sweet sweet moon days!) And our shop. Because we’ve got to raise some funds if we’re going to build a website and go to India.
